Earth, Taxes, and a Supplement à la carte
March saw the seventh anniversary of the Iraq invasion, and many
Brown Bag Lunch Vigils (
BBLV) commemorated that. This month, over one hundred vigils across the country will remind our elected representatives and neighbors that our tax money goes in the wrong direction when it goes to military spending.
Register for the BBLV in your congressional district by using this link for San Rafael and this link for Santa Rosa. (If you’ve already registered, you don’t have to do it again.) Join PDAers and other groups working for peace by following the money—or at least telling your representative and neighbors where their tax dollars go.
April 15—Tax Day
Let’s pour salt in taxpayers’ wounds by showing them the National Priority Project Interactive Tax Chart 2010 that shows where the government puts those tax dollars. (Hint: If you pony up $1,000 on the 15th, $245 will go to military spending.)
April 22—Earth Day
Earth Day comes the day after most BBLVs. We must tell Congress to vote to direct money to strengthen the EPA and fund renewable energy. At the moment, only 23 out of those 1,000 tax dollars go to the environment, energy, and science.
Late April/early May—Supplemental Budget Vote
The Senate Appropriations Committee has the $33 billion Supplemental Budget request, and it’s up to us to tell Congress not to approve it. Participate in the national call-in week April 12-16 and take action now with PDA’s Action Alert. But also make yourself seen and your voice heard at a BBLV to strengthen the message.
The BBLV page has all the resources you’ll need to be a Brown Bagger. We hope you’ll join the BBLVs in April and beyond.
In peace and solidarity,
BBLV National Team
