On August 10th, the Economic and Social Justice IOT resumed monthly conference calls. The Issue Organizing Team was re-organized and energized at the July PDA Grassroots Conference in Cleveland. Alice Chan, a leader of the new team from CA welcomed over seventy people to the call. IOT leader Randy Shannon discussed ‘full employment,’ a major goal of the IOT and urged members to make plans to attend the October 10th March for Jobs and Justice in Washington.
The guest speaker was Bill Fletcher, a new PDA Advisory Board member, and a leader in the African-American community and the labor movement. Fletcher discussed the retrenchment of progressives in the light of the difficulties of the Obama administration. He urged PDA members to work with labor on the October March, especially with local labor councils, with a view to building a PDA labor wing of union members and affiliates. He also discussed organizing the unemployed, finding ways to combat the withdrawal of capital from our communities, a financial transactions tax, and some issues in the labor movement. The next call will be at 9pm on Wednesday September 1st.
