Norman has announced plans to run for the seat currently held by Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey if she decides not to seek re-election.
Since the 1970s, Norman Solomon has been an outspoken opponent of nuclear power. He was a key organizer of the first civil disobedience campaign against an operating nuclear power plant in the United States (the Trojan Decommissioning Alliance in Oregon), spending 30 days in jail along the way. As the director of the landmark National Citizens Hearings for Radiation Victims, held near Capitol Hill in 1980, he helped to shine a national spotlight on the true human costs of the nuclear fuel cycle. Norman co-authored the seminal book “Killing Our Own: The Disaster of America’s Experience with Atomic Radiation” (written with Harvey Wasserman and published in 1982). Last week, The Huffington Post and many other websites featured Norman’s article Nuclear Power Madness
Media critic and author of a dozen books on foreign policy, domestic issues, media and political discourse — including “War Made Easy: How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death” — Norman is also co-chair of the Foreign Policy Committee of the California Democratic Party’s Progressive Caucus. He co-authored a state party resolution that was adopted in November 2009, titled “End the U.S. Occupation and Air War in Afghanistan,” which remains the official position of the California Democratic Party.
A tireless advocate for peace and social justice, he works to end perpetual war and strengthen the capacities of progressive movements on a wide range of international and domestic issues. Norman made three trips to Iraq and later visited Afghanistan in search of peaceful solutions to the current conflicts. He has worked for decades to reorder our national priorities, fighting for civil liberties, human rights, labor, healthcare for all, clean energy and sustainability. He is also national co-chair of the Healthcare Not Warfare campaign, launched by Progressive Democrats of America.
“The past decade of unending war has been terribly destructive, and perpetual war remains on the horizon — while the billions of dollars being squandered on warfare each week are desperately needed for a vast array of purposes here at home.”
Let’s help Norman put his strong progressive voice and experienced intellect to work for all of us!
