Wednesday, June 30, 2010
7:00pm – 9:00pm

Following the movie HAYDN REISS will join Pulitizer Prize winning author of The Color Purple, ALICE WALKER, and the award winning author of War Made Easy and Made Love, Got War, NORMAN SOLOMON, for a discussion about pursuing peace during wartime.

Every War Has Two Losers confronts two powerful ideas: Do wars lead to lasting peace and are wars inevitable? Based on the journals of William Stafford, a conscientious objector in World War Two and award-winning poet, Stafford reasoned that war was a choice – a human choice – and not inevitable. War was but one way to respond to conflict. The film is an invitation on how all of us can contribute to a more peaceful world.

Featuring Coleman Barks, Robert Bly, Maxine Hong Kingston, Michael Meade, W.S. Merwin, Naomi Shihab Nye, Kim Stafford and Alice Walker. Narration by Academy Award winner Linda Hunt. Voice of William Stafford by Peter Coyote. Music by John Gorka.

Afghanistan Action Event

Event Start Time:

A message from Norman Solomon, National Co-Chair Healthcare Not Warfare

“While the news about Afghanistan remains very grim, opposition to the war continues to grow. As co-chair of the foreign policy committee of the California Democratic Party’s Progressive Caucus, I was glad to co-author a resolution titled End the U.S. Occupation and Air War in Afghanistan.

“When the party’s executive board approved that resolution in mid-November — putting the state Democratic Party officially on record — the political shock waves zoomed all the way to Washington. My article ‘Biggest State Party to Obama: Get Out of Afghanistan’ provides a run-down on the resolution’s passage and its political impact.

“To help sustain the momentum of the resolution, on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 6) we’ll have a special Afghanistan Action gathering at a private home in Mill Valley, where I’ll talk about my recent trip to Kabul and present plans for a new media/organizing project to promote alternatives to more war in Afghanistan.

WHY WE NEED TO UNITE AROUND A PROGRESSIVE AGENDA
- with an opportunity for audience Q&A

"There is enormous pressure on Obama to be looking to the corporate wing of the Democratic party rather than the progressive wing of the Democratic party. The only way we can move this country in a progressive way is with an agenda supported by the grassroots.... “What this agenda must offer, and what I believe the American people are prepared to support especially with an inspiring leader like Obama is a fundamental change in our national priorities." --Nation interview, 6/13/08
