Dear Fellow Progressive Caucus Members,
The CDP Executive Board Meeting is right around the corner and to say that there’s a lot to talk about is an understatement!

After an especially stormy electoral season and as we try to quickly regain the use of our political sea legs for Caucus-land, I want to send a quick greeting to all and announce the initial details of our upcoming Progressive Caucus meeting at the CDP’s Executive Board gathering in Sacramento the weekend of November 19th – 21st.

WHAT: Progressive Caucus Meeting
WHEN: Saturday, November 20th, 8 PM
WHERE: Edgewater A, Radisson Hotel, 500 Leisure Lane, Sacramento, CA 95815

Details regarding the line-up of speakers are still being worked out, but for now, we can say that as expected, there will be a “What Happened and Where Do We Go From Here” talk for both the National and State elections from a Progressive-centric viewpoint. Speakers will include (former or future) candidates, leaders and activists involved with campaigns…..and you!

This gathering in Sonoma County will give a boost to a new effort, in the Bay Area and elsewhere, combining grassroots organizing with media outreach to reframe the politics of U.S. policies toward Afghanistan. Please bring a checkbook. Speakers will include Karen Bernal and Norman Solomon. The two of them, along with Marcy Winograd (who is now running against incumbent war hawk Rep. Jane Harman), co-authored the military-out-of-Afghanistan resolution that is now the official position of the California Democratic Party.

We can add to the momentum from the resolution that the California Democratic Party approved last November — calling for an end to the air war in Afghanistan, withdrawal of U.S. forces and an increase in humanitarian/development aid to that long-suffering country.

There’s a significant new straw in the political wind for President Obama to consider. The California Democratic Party has just sent him a formal and clear message: Stop making war in Afghanistan.

Overwhelmingly approved on Sunday (Nov. 15) by the California Democratic Party’s 300-member statewide executive board, the resolution is titled “End the U.S. Occupation and Air War in Afghanistan.”

I’m heading down to San Diego from Los Angeles (CA-36) this weekend to attend the California Democratic Party Executive Board meeting, where we will debate an End the Occupation and Air War in Afghanistan resolution I co-authored with Progressive Caucus Chair Karen Bernal and prolific author Norman Solomon. Already, we are hearing push back on one particular word. Occupation.

While right-wing ideologues intensify their attacks against any kind of decent social compact, the Obama administration shows more signs of ceding to corporate healthcare giants and Big Pharma. Meanwhile, on the warfare front, the U.S. escalation in Afghanistan is continuing.

But we can make a difference. PDA is working with many other activist groups to convene a strategy summit of the California Democratic Party’s Progressive Caucus. We’ll be gathering in San Luis Obispo next weekend and you’re invited!
