Letter Delivered to Rep. Woolsey's staff at May Brown Bag Lunch Vigil

April 18, 2011

Dear Representative Woolsey,

It is time to begin the “safe and orderly withdrawal” of troops and contractors in Afghanistan. The best way to effect this is by enacting HR 780, Rep. Barbara Lee’s “Responsible End to the War in Afghanistan Act.”

This is legislation whose time has come, and your cosponsorship can lead to the end of America’s longest war, with its tragic loss of life and debilitating loss of money that can better be spent here at home. Thank you for cosponsoring this vital legislation.

Santa Rosa, CA

Dear Representative Woolsey,

Since January 2010, the Brown Bag Lunch Vigils have been out in front of our representatives’ and senators’ offices, on street corners, and in parks to get the word out to our community that this country can give everyone access to healthcare, make jobs available to those who need them, stem the increase of carbon in our air, and correct the balance of power and wealth between those who have and those who have not. The common thread among many of our goals is that naysayers must be able to step out of their comfort zones and understand the terrible effects these problems have on ordinary people.

That’s no easy task, even for the most enlightened of us. Something that helps people see the importance of making sure that others in our country can take care of themselves—or receive help when they can’t—is seeing a goal laid out in print in a piece of simple legislation.

TAKE ACTION - A Platform for Prosperity: Healthcare NOT Warfare

February 25, 2011
By Tim Carpenter

After bailing out the bazillionaires on Wall Street, and throwing billions at a bad war in Iraq and a failed war in Afghanistan, the GOP’s answer to the voters of America is austerity and more sacrifice for anyone earning under a hundred grand a year—and that’s most of us. We can kiss goodbye our jobs, home ownership, our children’s education, healthcare, Social Security, and a host of other necessities that generate prosperity.

Marin Voice: Voting Against 'Irresponsible' Tax Breaks

By Rep. Lynn Woolsey
December 21, 2010

Published by Marin Independent Journal.

The tax cut legislation signed by President Barack Obama on Friday is a windfall for the wealthy that explodes the deficit by more than $850 billion and threatens Social Security and other social programs.

Nearly one quarter of the tax savings in the bill go to the wealthiest 1 percent of the population, and those savings will do little to stimulate employment or the economy.

Although the legislation includes an urgently need extension of unemployment benefits and middle-class tax relief, the ransom demanded for these by the Republicans—the “hostage takers” as even President Obama called them—was too high for me to support, and judging from the e-mails, phone calls, letters and Web postings we have received, too high for the 6th Congressional District as well.

Progressive House Democrat Co-Chair Vows Democrats Won't Roll Over to the GOP

Earl Ofari Hutchinson
November 16, 2010

Published by The Huffington Post.

In an exclusive interview, Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), co-chair of the Progressive House Caucus, talks with New American Media Political Analyst and Huffington Post Contributor Earl Ofari Hutchinson about the group’s strategy in the new, Republican-controlled House. The interview was conducted by New America Media.

THR: Many are not familiar with the Progressive House Caucus. How big is it?

LW: We had 83 members before the election. It is bicameral, with House and Senate members. It’s by far the largest caucus in Congress. We lost four members this election. But we also gained a couple of new members. We will not have less than 80 members in the next Congress. The Blue Dog Democrats lost almost two-thirds of their members.

Grijalva, Woolsey Urge Pelosi to Pursue "Fiscally Sound" Deficit Reduction

November 16, 2010, Washington, DC

Reps. Raúl M. Grijalva and Lynn Woolsey, co-chairs of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, sent the following letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi on Friday requesting a meeting to discuss the importance of passing a middle class tax cut. The letter highlights Caucus opposition to Republicans’ insistence on further cutting taxes for the wealthiest two percent of earners and urges the Speaker to pursue budget deficit reduction in a fiscally sound manner.

Letter Delivered to Rep. Woolsey's staff at October Brown Bag Lunch Vigil, Santa Rosa, CA

October 20, 2010

Dear Representative Woolsey,

October’s Brown Bag Lunch Vigils are making three simple but important requests: Sign Rep. Raul Grijalva’s letter to President Obama urging no cuts to Social Security, join Rep. John Conyers’ Out of Afghanistan Caucus, and cosponsor Rep. Barbara Lee’s HR 6045 to expedite our exit from Afghanistan.

Thank you for being a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Your unwavering voice and vote for progressive legislation is what will pull us away from regressive and unjust policies and lead us toward peace, equality for all, and an accountable government.

Letter delivered to Rep. Woolsey's staff at Jobs Emergency National Day of Action - Brown Bag Lunch Vigil, Santa Rosa, CA

September 15, 2010

Dear Representative Woolsey,

It shouldn’t come as news to you that jobs and the economy are the number-one concern Americans share right now. With 15 million people unemployed (not counting those underemployed), it is a frightening time for most people. Few people feel secure in their jobs, and this condition is taking a terrible toll on our society.

Sometimes it seems as if Congress truly doesn’t understand what’s going on outside of the Capitol. Perhaps visits home are too insulated—with members of Congress being surrounded only by friendly faces—to give them a true picture of the desperation and despair in this country.

Woolsey Calls On Simpson To Resign From Deficit Panel

August 28, 2010, Washington, DC

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) today called on former Senator Alan Simpson to resign his position as co-chairman of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform in light of Simpson’s recent remarks regarding Social Security. Woolsey issued the following statement:

“Former Senator Alan Simpson’s latest attack on Social Security demonstrates that he is too biased to serve as co-chair of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, which will likely recommend changes to the Social Security program.“

Describing Social Security as a ‘milk cow with 310 million tits,’ and complaining about ‘people on Social Security who milk it to the last degree,’ Simpson illustrates that he does not have an open mind about the program and doesn’t understand it either.

Letter Delivered to Rep. Woolsey's staff at August Brown Bag Lunch Vigil, Santa Rosa, CA

August 18, 2010

Dear Representative Woolsey,

Things are changing fast for this world, but many of these things are headed in the wrong direction. You are in a unique position — at least in regard to most of the world’s population — to put some very important things on a positive track. And these are things that will reverberate around the planet.

To do so, however, you might need to disabuse yourself and your colleagues of some pervasive and destructive notions. The first of these is that Americans are more valuable than other people in the world.

Letter Delivered to Rep. Woolsey's staff at June Brown Bag Lunch Vigil

Santa Rosa, CA
June 16, 2010

Dear Representative Woolsey,

It’s like a trick of misdirection, except that instead of a magician distracting an audience from seeing how the legerdemain is accomplished, we’re living through Congress deflecting our attention from important domestic issues over to patches on a system that is ready to burst.

Instead of enacting health insurance reforms that would have been fiscally responsible, ethical, and humane—such as Medicare for All with a single-payer system—we’re faced with the president and Congress telling us that to balance our budget we need to make cuts in two of the only programs in our country that offer protection to those who most need it: Medicare and Social Security.

Letter Delivered to Rep. Woolsey's staff at May Brown Bag Lunch Vigil

May 19, 2010

Dear Representative Woolsey,

May should be a time of celebrating the beauty of living, with spring in full bloom and the recognition of our mothers as our source of life. But there have been too many events that make celebration difficult, if not impossible, for the members of Progressive Democrats of America.

Blue Dog Blues

Why is progressive Lynn Woolsey working so hard for center-right Jane Harman?

By Norman Solomon
bohemian.com
May 5, 2010

This is a grim story about the care and feeding of a Blue Dog.

Right now, Southern California congresswoman Jane Harman is facing a serious primary challenge from a genuine progressive. Harman is a member of the center-right caucus of House Democrats known as the Blue Dog Coalition. She has chosen not to join the Progressive Caucus.

In sharp contrast, her opponent, Marcy Winograd, is calling for the government “to invest in housing, education, healthcare, transportation—not to perpetuate a war economy that is draining us, robbing us of money that we desperately need.” And Winograd adds: “I challenge my opponent to stop voting for this war machine.”

While belonging to the largest caucus on Capitol Hill (with a membership now above 80), some members of the Progressive Caucus often say that they need more colleagues who’ll be willing to vote against war and in favor of a truly progressive legislative agenda. But if Progressive Caucus members want to move the House of Representatives in a progressive direction, you’d never know it when there’s a real chance to replace a Blue Dog with a progressive.
