It was like Grand Central Station in Washington, D.C., last week when PDA teams of citizen-lobbyists took to three different tracks on Capitol Hill.

The Stop Global Warming/Environmental Issues Organizing Team has been focusing most of its energy on passing a good climate/energy bill, which actually addresses the problem. Frustrated by the many flaws in the bills under serious consideration, this IOT decided it was time to start the push for Plan B—the carbon tax with revenue returned to households.

Subject: Write Back! Letters needed to refute the Oakland Tribune editorial against SB 810

Dear East Bay Single Payer Activists,

Below is an editorial in today’s Oakland Tribune.

It is part of a newly emerging and growing opposition to single payer, which exists both at the elite level (like the Trib’s publishers) as well as at the grassroots (like Tea Partiers). Such a movement will embolden Republican legislators to fight against SB 810, instead of being resigned to its passage and delivery to the governor. And it will embolden the GOP to wage electoral campaigns for assembly and senate seats on a platform of opposing single payer.

Showdown in Pasadena with "Torture Judge" Jay Bybee

It’s a problem that Jay Bybee is a judge on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. How can he serve as a judge when he seriously violated the laws against inhumane treatment of detainees and gave legal approval to interrogation techniques that amount to torture. We agree with Patrick Leahy, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, that if Bybee’s a decent human being, he’ll resign. We agree with MoveOn and People for the American Way, who’ve submitted 140,000 petition signatures to John Conyers, Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, asking him to impeach Bybee. And we agree with the New York Times, which called for his impeachment twice in April.
