Lynn Hamilton, Recipient of the Roberta Hollowell Award “In Recognition of her Dedicated Service to Issues of Importance for All Women and Democratic Party Values.”

Prepared remarks. Award presented by former Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey.

Thank you Lynn Woolsey. I have always admired you and held you up as an example of an elected official who stuck to your values the entire time you served as our Congresswoman. I urge all of the elected officials who were endorsed by the Democratic Central Committee to follow Lynn’s example and stick to your values and the values set forth in the Democratic Party Platform even though you might be tempted to betray your principles for personal gain, power or advancement.

The Week in PDA
by Conor Boylan
April 17, 2011

The week culminates in Earth Day, but there’s plenty of action before then, as our largest Issue Organizing Team and one of our most active IOTs hold their calls this week.

EARTH DAY ACTION

Earth Day 2011 is Friday, April 22, and PDA is joining with our allies at Million Letter March and Citizens Climate Lobby in an effort to send one million letters to Congress demanding effective climate legislation.

We’re savvy enough to know that this Congress is not interested in effective climate legislation, so we need to show them there is broad support for it while we build a movement for change.

Toward a Greening of Politics

Clearing the way for a progressive future

by Norman Solomon
January 28, 2011

Sure you want to jump into that cesspool?”

I’ve heard countless variations of the same question in recent months, as the possibility of running for Congress has become more real. With all the big-money hit pieces and mud fights that pass for “politics” these days, no wonder so many people see election campaigns as little more than depravity masquerading as democracy.

But there are lives in the balance, near and far, from the North Bay to Afghanistan. A list of what’s at stake would be endless: the rights of workers, the ecology of rivers and the injustices of a healthcare system largely run for corporate profit.

Published by The Sacramento Bee.

If the climate change talks in Cancún are lumbering toward an anticlimax, it isn’t for lack of urgency.

A report released at the U.N. conference a week ago warns that by 2030 climate change will indirectly cause nearly 1 million deaths a year as well as $157 billion in damage. The greatest impact will be borne by the world’s poorest nations, which have contributed least to the greenhouse gas emissions that are warming the planet.

When the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Cancun, Mexico, wraps up Friday, the world will be no closer to an agreement to cut greenhouse gases than it was a year ago following the disappointing meeting in Copenhagen.

Not that there’s less urgency to alter humanity’s collision course with the powerful forces of nature, a path established when we began burning fossil fuels more than two centuries ago.

In the wake of the midterm elections, environmental groups are rethinking their strategy for addressing climate change. The defeat of the green agenda is measured not only in Republican control of the House but also in the huge amounts of money, time, energy and good will green groups invested in the pursuit of failed comprehensive climate legislation.

Congresswoman Lee Releases Statement on International Climate Talks in Cancun

Office of Rep. Barbara Lee
December 2, 2010, Washington, DC

Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-9) released the following statement regarding the ongoing United Nations Climate Change Conference taking place in Cancun, Mexico from November 29, December 10, 2010.

“There is no denying the urgent threat posed by global climate change, and its potential to exacerbate instances of inequality and suffering around the world,” said Congresswoman Lee. “The science tells us we will need to take even more significant and urgent action than previously understood in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

We Can Still Price Carbon With a Republican House

Help build the movement for sensible climate policy—Attend ‘Pricing Carbon: The Wesleyan Conference

Published by The Huffington Post.

Now that Republicans have taken control of the U.S. House, environmentalists are wringing their hands, seeing no possibility that Congress will enact effective climate and energy legislation in the near or distant future.

In his post-election news conference last week, President Obama all but declared cap-and-trade dead: “There are a lot of Republicans that ran against the energy bill that passed in the House last year. And so it’s doubtful that you could get the votes to pass that through the House this year or next year or the year after.”

Take Action on July 21, the three-month anniversary of the BP blowout .

Published by Associated Press.

A federal appeals court on Thursday rejected the federal government’s effort to restore an offshore deep-water drilling moratorium, opening the door to resumed drilling in the Gulf of Mexico while the legal fight continues.

A three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled soon after an afternoon hearing in a lawsuit filed by companies that oppose the drilling ban. The moratorium was struck down June 22 by U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman.

IOT: Stop Global Warming – Environment Issues June Call

The team welcomed Danna Moore from Future 500 to discuss the organization’s efforts to recruit businesses to join in the effort for sound climate legislation. In addition, we discussed the role of the EPA in regulating CO2 and recent attempts to gut the Clean Air Act, the bill which gives the EPA the authority to regulate air quality.

While the EPA is neither the best mechanism, nor does it have the ability to entirely address the climate crisis, it is in the position to begin the process and could produce the same or better results than the short term goals of the current legislation under consideration.

Also included: an update on our legislative strategy, the Cleveland Grassroots Leadership Conference, and Mountain-top mining.

People,

Did you know ARCO gas was BP?

The very LEAST we can all do to protest BP’s reckless and deliberate ignorance of it’s environmental responsibilities and ethical and legal duties as a corporate entity is to boycott ARCO and other BP brands. There certainly are plenty of other places to buy gas, etc.

Here’s a list of BP companies:
